European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced a new visa policy that will make it easier for Indonesian citizens to enter the European Union. The policy allows Indonesians making their second visit to the EU to be eligible for a multi-entry Schengen visa. This decision was revealed during a joint press conference with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Brussels, emphasizing the aim to strengthen bonds between Indonesia and the EU in various areas such as education, investment, and social exchange.
Von der Leyen highlighted that this visa policy is part of the people-to-people connections pillar, a crucial aspect of the EU–Indonesia strategic partnership aimed at building bridges between the two populations. The President also praised President Prabowo’s visit to Brussels, signifying a commitment to openness and collaboration amidst global uncertainties.
President Prabowo welcomed the deepening ties between EU and Indonesia, recognizing Europe’s pivotal role in maintaining global stability. He stressed the importance of trust and shared values in long-term relationships, extending the partnership to encompass values, solidarity, and a shared vision for the future. Prabowo expressed optimism for the finalization of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and humorously hinted at holding the signing ceremony in Brussels.
With the introduction of the new visa policy and the prospect of a strengthened economic partnership, Indonesia and the European Union are embarking on a new era of bilateral relations characterized by increased openness, strategic cooperation, and mutual benefits for their citizens.
